![]() It can only be found by listening out for the organ playing or by hijacking a TV Van (the antenna on top always points towards it). To save the game, the player needs to find the Jesus Saves church. In the Industrial District, the maximum wanted level of six in both versions, resulting in the Army chasing the player in Land Roamers, both armed and unarmed, Tanks, and Pacifiers. The Residential District bears a wanted level of five in the PC version, with FBI agents pursuing the protagonist, and six in the PlayStation version, where the Army will chase the protagonist. The Downtown District allows a maximum wanted level of four, which results in the SWAT team chasing the player. Each district also has a maximum wanted level that the player can acquire, likely to make later levels more difficult: In each of them are three gangs, whose bosses give the player missions via payphones. However, it is more likely that the game takes place in an unspecific year/time (anywhere from 1999–2013), fitting with the game's setting of "Anywhere City, USA".Īnywhere City is divided into 3 sectors: Downtown, Residential, and Industrial. According to the official GTA 2 Design Document shared by the DMA Design programmer Mike Dailly in 2022, it is said that the game will be set slightly in the future (referencing Max Headroom's infamous " 20 Minutes into the Future" quote) to give more artistic freedom and scope for features. The weapons in the game are futuristic, and the website says "three weeks into the future," but as previously mentioned, all vehicles are distinctively old world. However, Johnny Riccaro, an in-game radio host, mentions that the millennium's coming, and mentions the Y2K bug, suggesting that Grand Theft Auto 2 is set in 1999, the year it was released. There are police records on the Grand Theft Auto 2 website showing the dates of July 7, 2013, and July 10, 2013, including the criminal records of characters who are killed during the events of the game, indicating the game may be set around July 2013. The year the game is set in is extremely ambiguous. The player controls Claude Speed, an uprising criminal in the districts of Anywhere who works both with and against the many criminal syndicates of the city. ![]() All civilian vehicles are retro-modified versions of popular cars and trucks built up until the 1960s, further reinforcing its retrofuturistic influences. The city is heavily stylized in a retrofuturistic design, displaying a contrast between a vivid color palette and advanced science fiction weapons and postwar architecture and transportation. ![]() This character is meant for immersion.GTA 2 takes place in a large metropolis only vaguely referred to as Anywhere City. Aw, who am I kidding? The comedy is not so much in the story as it is in the sandbox when messing around, but I digress. Except this time the game is geared towards coolness with a little comedy. This is another one of those “robot” guys like in South Park: The Stick of Truth. Not a tear in his eye about his girl, not even a facial expression, he just finds his safe house and goes looking for work someplace. Luckily the bridge they happened to be riding on gets bombed and causes a car accident so he can escape. Then the cops get him and start hauling him away. In the beginning of the game, he’s robbing a bank and his girlfriend betrays him. You really can’t tell how he feels, total disconnection. Seeing how he would get involved with gangs, heists, and doing a ritual dance to summon a tank and blow things up with it, this is quite a sociopath criminal. Wow, it’s like I’m the voice in this guy’s head to wreak havoc!Ĭlaude Speed, if that is his real name, spends the entire game without saying a word. Going towards a more realistic approach in a sandbox, open season game with tons of weapons and violence! Though it does get a little more 3D in GTA II, GTA III goes full 3D. Wow, it’s like I’m guiding someone on a higher level! Rockstar Games went hard by making this character because they took on big transition into the 3D world coming from the overhead shooter of GTA II. He’s mute, he kills, and he’ll do anything that would question any sane person’s morality as long as they got money. ![]() Who remembers this guy? Anyone having a Playstation 2 does! This is Claude Speed, the silent protagonist in Grand Theft Auto III. Oh boy, now we’re getting into some brutality.
